A hand up, not a handout

Our Tshepisong Sewing Project in Roodepoort is a good example of how St Vincent de Paul Society is helping people to help themselves.

A group of unemployed women have been given training and facilities to enable them to start a small sewing business. Part of the training has been to make the ladies understand that they really have to stand out in a competitive market if their business is to thrive.

They have risen to the challenge by producing pillowcases for Fleuorama Home, and are hoping to get more contracts like this.

The ladies have learned to make their own designs and cut patterns. They receive the first item of each new product for themselves, which they may sell or keep.

The task is a valuable training exercise where production, setting prices, selling, and handling money all play an important role.

Two sales have been held at the Roodepoort Church - where R1 900 worth of goods were sold.

Please support the project by ordering bags, placemats and other items from us. Contact us on 011 869 0458 or email
